When the indicator says you’re out of oil, should you continue driving anyway (Or: The day there was no marketing team)

Picture yourself working in an office building. Your generic office building, with offices along the wall, rows and rows of cubicles, and a “cafeteria” area that’s home to a few overpriced vending machines and overworked coffee pots. Imagine that your boss has asked you to talk to the marketing team about creating a new banner ad or a brochure for this, that, or the other thing. So you wander over to the head of the marketing team’s office. He’s away on a business trip, so you next head over to some of the cubicles that house the worker bees in the marketing department. They’re all empty. There’s not a tradeshow going on, so where can they all be? You ask around. No one’s quite sure, but they mention that there’s this nasty cold going around, and maybe, just maybe, they’ve all succumbed to it.

That’s right, ladies and gentlemen. With the exception of one astoundingly healthy woman and our never-tiring business-trip-gallivanting boss, the entire marketing team is out sick. I stayed home on Monday and slept almost all day - it’s surprising I hadn’t caught it earlier, given how there people were getting sick at the show in Chicago, but I somehow managed to stay healthy (if a bit exhausted and worn out from the tradeshow) until Sunday night, long enough to have a good visit with my parents while they were here. Tuesday, I went back to work and managed to make it til about 3:30, when I left to go home, curl up in bed, and do the rest of my work in my pajamas. This morning, I woke up feeling worse than ever, only to hear shortly after waking that two other co-workers were sick and working from home today as well. A third is taking vacation time (though she really ought to be taking sick leave, since she’s bed-ridden with the flu). An email from the boss this morning said he’d be back this afternoon from his business trip and would fumigate. I laughed. (It hurt.)

I’ve worked some, but not very efficiently, since my head’s all in a fog. When not working, I’ve been sitting on the couch watching Season 1 of Gilmore Girls, my birthday present from Laura. Of course, now I’ve finished with Season 1 and am wanting to watch more, which, of course, I do not presently have. Good thing Barnes and Noble’s just down the street - I may have to treat myself to a “I feel like crap” DVD and a cup of coffee. Or maybe I’ll splurge and get a mocha.

I’ve been knitting during my mindless Gilmore-Girls-watching brain fart. I wish I could share pictures, because it’s been so long since I’ve shared any knitting pictures, but unfortunately, this is Christmas knitting. It is that time of year, after all. If it were charity Christmas knitting, or knitting for my grandmother, or something like that, I’d be more than happy to share. But unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), everyone I know reads this blog. And then, of course, the surprise would be ruined. So, no pictures til January. I know, I suck.

I had all these profound things I wanted to talk about. I get in the car on my way to or from work, settle in for my 30-minute commute, and start thinking about all these wonderful stories to share or points of view to drone on about and analyze. But when I finally find the time and sit down in front of the computer, my mind goes blank, and all that comes to my fingertips is “I had a muffin for breakfast and a really horrid cup of coffee - who are these men who honestly believe that making a pot of coffee with 3 - three - pouches of grounds is a good idea?” Yeah, not so great, huh?

I’d jot down these ideas, but writing while you’re speeding along on the interstate at 70 mph isn’t generally recommended. I ought to invest in a dictophone. Instead, I think I’m going to go invest in Season 2 of the Gilmore Girls and a grande skinny mocha with whip.
