A Laborless Labor Day

So much for labor day being a day of work. I woke up early this morning with a raging headache. I took two Aleve and went back to bed, hoping to sleep it off. I managed to doze off and on, but by the time noon rolled around, the headache was even worse. It wasn’t quite as bad as some migraines I’ve had in the past, but it was definitely bad enough that I was seeing flashes of light and felt nauseated all afternoon. I spent almost all day in bed. By early evening, the pain had passed, but I felt wiped out. The only thing I accomplished was walking next door and talking to my neighbor about pet-sitting while I’m away next week (which, thankfully, she agreed to do). The next three days are going to be extremely busy.

Still, at least I have these adorable sweet little babies to make me feel better. They spent all day curled up with me, licking my face and trying to make me feel better.

I miss knitting. I mean, I really really miss it. I’ve literally had no time to pick up the needles at all lately. When I’m not at work, I’m either sleeping or working on house stuff (and prettymuch failing - god help me if I ever have kids!), working on mom’s site, or attempting to have some sort of a social life. None of which allow me the time to sit and knit.

My circle of friends has set up and maintained two traditions. The first started several years ago when friends Hans and Laura first moved to the Triangle. Once a week or so, we got together and started watching the DVDs of Six Feet Under, a show which Hans and Laura had seen, but I had not. When we finished with that, we started watching ER every Thursday at my place, since they didn’t have their TV set up for anything but DVDs. When ER got too hokey to continue watching, we started watching LOST - we caught up on the first two seasons and then watched Season 3 every Wednesday as it aired. Now that LOST is on hiatus until February, we’ve started gathering to watch Heroes. Our TV-watching group has grown from the three of us to now include Hans’s friend Mary, a fellow Duke physics grad student, and our friends Thomas and Eva. Both Mary and I had seen LOST, and we’ve both seen Heroes, but it’s still fun to re-watch the episodes, and it’s especially fun to watch them with people who haven’t yet seen them and who have no idea what’s going to happen. The hardest part is keeping myself from blurting out spoilers!

The other tradition we’ve established is game night. Game night is a little less complicated, as we don’t have to arrange it around everyone’s schedules like we do with TV night. It initially started out as card night, after I kept saying how much I missed playing cards now that I no longer lived with Wes. When Wes and I lived together, we played cards nearly every night. I joke that I love living alone, but it’s frustrating sometimes, because Gambit hasn’t quite mastered the rules of cribbage or rummy yet. So we established card night - sometimes it’s just three or four of us, other times it’s a far larger group. We play rummy, cribbage, spades, hearts, and Hans is even teaching us to play bridge! However, there’s a catch: one of our friends, Laura, absolutely hates playing cards and will not play, no matter what. She’s a pretty good sport about it, and will sit by and watch us play, but never will she join a hand. So from time to time, we’ll pull out a board game or something so as to not leave her out. Regardless, we try to have game night at least twice a month.

But for all this, I still miss my knitting. I’m really hoping that I’ll get to spend a little bit of time knitting while I’m in Chicago. We’ll see how that goes… Wish me luck!
