The Missing Manning
You know what sucks? Leaving work when it’s dark outside. In the summertime. That’s my life as of late - I leave home in the morning around 7:30, work all day (occasionally taking a lunch break if there’s time), and on lucky days, I leave around 6:30. On most days lately, I’ve been leaving somewhere between 7:30 - 9:30. Today’s departure time was 8:30.
Mom asked me the other day what I’d been knitting on. I just stared, sorta slack-jawed (which, I should mention, doesn’t work so well for a reaction when your conversation is taking place over the phone). Knitting? I don’t have time to clean, I’m lucky if I get a load of laundry done during the week, and I arrive home so tired I can’t even contemplate eating dinner (which on the plus side makes getting up in the morning that much easier, because by 6:30 am, I’m ravenous for breakfast…) I’m knitting when I can, because I’m a bad sock pal and still owe my Sockapalooza pal her socks (I know, shame on me), but most of what “free” time I’ve got these days is spent staring at the wall, or if I can muster it, reading a book, playing a few hands of cards with my friends, and/or working on the Yarn Expressions website. I’m just too tired to do much of anything else. It’s a shame, too, because I want so badly to start working on my Christmas knitting and have stuff to add to Ravelry. I can’t even keep up with my blog-reading - it’s currently sitting at 1077 unread posts. (My friend Laura told me that one of these days, I’m just going to have to admit defeat and click the dreaded “mark all as read” button.)
All that said, I really am enjoying my “new” job. It’s not really quite so new anymore, I guess, since I’ve been there nearly 8 weeks now. And since I had to hit the ground running almost as soon as I started, I almost feel like an old pro at this point. I love my team, my boss is awesome, the work is interesting, and while there’s a lot of it, it’s quite varied, so it’s never dull or tedious (or when it is, I can at least fall back on the fact that there are other more interesting tasks to look forward to later in the day). As with any job, there are, of course, moments of frustration, but overall, I’m really loving it. The hours are long and hard right now, since we’re currently in the last few weeks leading up to the biggest trade show of the year, and our team is the one organizing everything. But I’m told that after this, things calm down quite a bit, and I’ll be able to go back to a regular 8-5 schedule. I’m sure my cats will appreciate that, at the very least - they never seem to happy with me when I stumble home at 9:00. Needy little buggers!
Someone emailed me the other day to ask when I’d be updating my store with new hand-dyed sock yarn. The answer is… I don’t know. I may be able to get around to dyeing some new stuff in the second of September or in October, and lord knows, I’d certainly like to, but I can’t make any promises right now. I’ll certainly post about it here if there is new stuff added to the store, though, I promise.
At any rate, I promise I’ll try to update a little more frequently, so long as you guys don’t mind that I likely won’t be able to post much knitting content for a while. Many apologies in advance. At the moment, I’m doing little but maintaining spreadsheets, creating graphics and PDFs for people, and sitting in on lots and lots of meetings. The nice thing about this up-coming trade show? I get to fly to Chicago. And that means I get to knit. If only while I’m in the air… :)
