In the hours leading up to my departure

Somehow, it’s already Thursday. I’m not sure where the rest of the week went. I’m serious - it seems like yesterday it was Sunday. And now, I’m leaving for Ohio tomorrow, and I’m finding myself with a good bit still to do.

I’ve made my list of what to pack, and as soon as my laundry is finished, I’ll start the actual packing. It’s such a hassle figuring out what’s kosher and what’s verboten when it comes to air travel these days… but I think I’ve got it figured out, and the things I’m taking seem to be on the okay list.

The thing that’s stressing me out a bit is that I can’t decide what knitting project to take. I’ve got four rows left before I’m finished with Sahara, and I’m hoping to finish that up tonight so that I can pack it. My Sockapalooza socks are going to take some pattern re-working, and I don’t particularly feel like doing that before or on the trip, so those are out. I’m thinking about just starting another pair of Aurelia socks. It’s funny - I’ve got a huge list of sock patterns queued up, and all I can think about is Aurelia. I might take two pairs with me, though, because I’m planning on spending a lot of time at the airport tomorrow.

My flight’s not scheduled to leave until 7:00 pm, but there’s an earlier flight that leaves around 3:30 or something. My plan is to arrive at the airport around noon or 12:30 in the hopes that I can get on that earlier flight via standby… Sure, my chances aren’t terribly good, but if I can arrive in Columbus earlier than 9:00 pm, that’d be nice. However, assuming that I can’t, that means I’ll be spending roughly 6-7 hours sitting around in the airport. And not even the good terminal - I’m flying out of Terminal C at RDU, and it’s tiny. Still, there’s a cafe that has free WiFi, so at least there’s that. And I’m thinking about taking a few books, my knitting, and some DVDs, so I ought to be able to keep myself occupied, regardless of whether or not I get on the earlier flight.

In the meantime, I’ve spent my week spinning and watching movies. I rented three movies last night - The Fountain, The Holiday, and The Good German. The first was only so-so. It was pretty in the same way Pan’s Labyrinth was pretty, and the story could have been really good, but… it was lacking something. Still, I don’t mind looking at Hugh Jackman for two hours, so it wasn’t exactly a waste of my time. The Holiday was fun - not a truly great movie, but a damn good one as far as romantic comedies go. And I really like Jude Law, Jack Black, and Kate Winslet, so it was an enjoyable two hours. I’d read The Good German, but didn’t realize it was a movie until I was at the video store last night (which is surprising, considering the fairly elite cast the movie sports). The movie itself was fairly slow and dry, but it was interesting visually, at least. They really did capture the cinemetography of 1950s film noir - the super high contrast, some shots grossly overexposed, some severely underexposed, sharp angles and bright lights spilling into a dark room from the lit hallway… Still, the movie felt tedious. Oh well. With the lack of any decent shows on TV this summer, I’m wondering if I shouldn’t sign up for Netflix again, though. These three movies cost me $7.50 to rent, and that was with a coupon - without the coupon, it would have been $12.50. I could get Netflix for $9.99/mo… And I have a feeling I’m going to be watching a lot of movies this summer, so maybe it’d be a good investment.

As for the spinning, I’m working up some hand-painted wool top in browns and tans that Mom gave me.

Spinning

Please forgive me for the poor quality of the photos - nighttime photography’s not my forte, obviously. :)

Spinning

It’s still not 100% evenly spun, but I’m getting better. I think this stuff is destined to become sock yarn for one of my guy friends at some point in the future… For now, I’m just enjoying the mesmerizing monotony of spinning, though.

  1. You’re doing a nice job on the spinning, but don’t make it into socks for someone other than yourself — it’s not superwash.
