Ride a painted pony, let the spinning wheel spin

It’s been hot here for the past couple of days, and since I haven’t yet turned on the AC in an attempt to save some money, it’s just as hot (or hotter and stuffier) inside as it is outside. That doesn’t make for a very productive Liz - when the apartment is reaching a balmy 88°, you don’t feel much like doing anything. Just thinking too hard seems to work up a sweat, and while sweating isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it doesn’t go very well with knitting. Especially when you’re knitting with non-superwash wool (I swear, even the superwash stuff I was trying to knit with seemed to felt some in my sweaty hands, though… Ew.)

It cooled off a little last night, though, so I worked on some spinning. I’m still a bit mad at Sahara right now, so I’m taking a break from knitting for a day or so. (I won’t be able to stay mad at it for too long, since it’s actually quite beautiful, but still… I’m allowing myself a juvenile bout of “TISNF!!!” for the moment.) Anyway, I pulled out some of the fleece mom brought for me in March and started spinning away at it last night while I watched crappy movies and not-quite-funny SNL sketches. (I never watch SNL, so it was even more crappy because it was actually a re-run of the one episode this season I’ve seen…) I was glad to have something else to concentrate on, truth be told.

Spinning Grape Jelly
About 1.5 oz. of spun wool top singles

The fleece 100% wool top, from the Louet Northern Lights line, in colorway #50 Grape Jelly, pretty shades of deep blues and purples and electric light blue. It’s always amazing to me how such vibrant, brightly-colored fleeces can result in far more subdued yarns after they’re spun up. See? The original is much, much brighter:

When I took the photo, I had spun about 1.5 oz. of singles. I’ve now got about 1.75 oz. of it, and I think I’m going to spin up some undyed grey/brown wool to ply it with, to make a fairly subdued fingering weight yarn. I’m not entirely sure what I’m going to do with it, but I’m thinking it wants to be knit up into an Argosy Scarf for a friend of mine. I know the pattern’s written for DK- or worsted-weight yarn, and what I’ll have is fingering, but honestly, this scarf, in my opinion, needs to be a smallish accent scarf. So, I think it’ll work out just fine. We’ll see what the yarn says when it’s finished.

In other news, I got my SP10 package from Adia yesterday! Whoohoo!

SP10 package #2
Package #2 from my secret pal, Adia

The package contained two skeins of Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sport, undyed because my pal knows I like to dye my own yarn (yay!), two different kinds of lip balm, a bag of Jelly Bellies (long since consumed - I ♥ jellybeans), and a beautiful card. I’ve got the best secret pal around. :)

  1. Skittles lip balm, huh? Ha… that sounds interesting.

  2. Funny, when I saw Skittles lip balm I immediately thought of CJ.

  3. Grape Jelly! Looks nothing like what I’d actually eat, but it’s lovely all the same.

I’m teaching myself to spin on my friend Louet S15, and I long for the day that my “yarn” looks anything like yours. My drop spindle, while far slower, was much easier.
