knitting isn’t all we do

The thing I love about what I do for a living is the people it puts me in contact with. Not only are my staff talented knitters, but they’re good friends too, and occasionally we have a chance to have a girls night out. Like tonight.

dinner with friends Kim, Jill, Deanna and I had dinner together at a new-ish Thai restaurant in Providence (which was excellent by the way). Look at my Chicken Rama, made with coconut milk red curry sauce. Every bit as good as it looks.

After dinner we went to Pottery By You to learn how to make fused glass. This is Laura, our teacher.

Laura shows us the different types of glass available

She gave us an overview of how fused glass is made, the materials involved and made some suggestions for first projects. Several of us thought we might attempt buttons, and Jill jumped right in, deciding to make a pin.

The rest of us were fascinated, but a bit overwhelmed, so we decided to watch Jill create her objet d’art. She scored and cut larger pieces of glass, she ground down the rough edges of the big piece that would be the base of the pin, she arranged and re-arranged her colorful bits until they looked just right, and then gave it to Laura to fire it. It’ll be ready to pick up next week. Here it is before firing.

The rest of us took home lots of great ideas to cogitate on. I know I’ll go back. Soon.
