A SIP from the well of unproductivity

That’s SIP – “socks in progress” – and it’s all I’ve got to show for today.

I woke up early this morning (or at least early for (a) me and (b) a Saturday), and it the weather was beautiful. The sun wasn’t fully up yet, and it was crisp and cool outside. I had such plans for the day – I was going to do some dyeing in the morning and then head out to the farmer’s market for some fresh produce later in the afternoon. Then lethargy set in. As it started to warm up, the lack of caffeine and enough sleep kicked in, and I decided to lie down for just a bit. I set the alarm for an hour, and woke up four hours later. Yeah, I know.

By the time I woke up, it was hot and muggy outside. Someone needs to inform Mother Nature that it is spring, not summer, and 85° days are not yet acceptable. I refuse to turn the AC on this early in the year (mostly on principle, but also because I just can’t afford it right now), but it was so stuffy and warm in the apartment that I ended up not doing any of the things I had planned on. I’m telling myself that I’m going to get up early again tomorrow morning and do those things I wanted to do today before it gets too warm in the apartment again, but… we’ll see how things actually turn out. Stay tuned.

So instead of dyeing today, I just knit. I finished up the first of the merino lace socks:

The pattern was fun, and I really like the way it helped out the color progression of the variegated yarn. I kinda wish I had done it on 0s instead of 1s, though, because the finished sock is a bit baggy (though not so baggy that it’s unwearable, at least). Oh well. I did make some alterations to the pattern. First, I didn’t make it quite as tall, since the pattern called for three skeins of yarn, and I only had two and didn’t want to risk running out of yarn. (It’s still taller than I make most of my socks, so… yay for that.) Second, I made the heel flap quite a bit shorter than they called for (I’m also not so sure I like the continued pattern down the heel flap – it feels pretty unsturdy to me… We’ll see how it holds up.) And third, I decreased the number of stitches in the foot from 66 to 60 because I have narrow feet (and even then, it’s still a bit large).

After I finished that sock, I decided to start another one, but not its mate. I’m one of those kids who was absent from school they day they administered the SSS (Second Sock Syndrome) vaccine, apparently, and except for a few bouts of remission, I’ve suffered from it my whole life (or at least my knitting life). While there is no cure, I manage the crippling disorder by mixing up my projects. I’ll come back to this sock’s mate after I’ve knit on a different sock for a while.

So what did I start? Another pattern from Favorite Socks, the “Cable Rib Socks,” which I’m working up in some of my own hand-dyed sock yarn. The color is “Sgt. Day-Glo” and is one of the colorways I’m planning on selling to mom’s store once I’ve got a batch of colorways large enough to send.

I obviously haven’t gotten very far yet, but I wanted to get a picture of the SIP before it got too dark out. It’s a pretty mindless pattern, which is nice, so I’ll probably get a good bit done on it tonight before I hit the sack. Which I’m going to do early. You know, so I can get up early tomorrow and be productive and all that jazz. Yeah. Stay tuned.
