On feeling worthy

As predicted, this week has been super busy so far, and it’s looking like I’m not going to get done half of what I had wanted to. Sadly, the things put on the back burner until next week are the things I actually want to do (i.e. web designing, dyeing), and while I do need to do these things, too, their urgency is not quite as great as those things which I need-yet-do-not-want to do (i.e. cleaning, grocery shopping). Tomorrow will be busy – I need to pick up my dress (there ended up being no time to do it today while they were open), finish cleaning, and get stuff for dinner before my parents arrive around 6:00 or 7:00 pm, but if I get up early and work quickly and efficiently, I may be able to squeeze in some dyeing time before evening approaches. It’s doubtful, but I’m still holding onto those last dredges of hope.

I did, however, get four skeins of a new colorway dyed last night. I’ll hold off on posting pictures until I can show the lot (I’ve got plans and yarn for 4 additional colorways), but the name "Sgt. DayGlo" ought to give you at least a glimmer of an idea of what it might look like. I finished rewinding and labeling it tonight, and while it’s not my ultimate favorite ever, I couldn’t help but just stare at it after I had finished. It looks professional. It’s beautiful. I just stared and stared. For probably five minutes I just sat there and looked at it. And the only thing that kept going through my head was, "I made this." This is my handiwork. I did this. I made something that’s worthy of purchase. Practically the only other time I have welled up with pride like that was when I designed some sites for my previous job. Where I’ve been speechless (a rarity for me) and have had to take a few minutes to just stare in awe. I am capable.

In other fiber-related news, Mom’s bringing me an old spinning wheel of hers when she and Dad come up tomorrow. I get to learn how to spin! I’ve been squeeing like a little girl and telling everyone I know who will put up with my fiber-talk (and even then to some who won’t because I’m just that excited about it). I get to learn how to spin!

In non-fiber news, I got a haircut today. It’s been six months (I really ought to go more often than twice a year), and it freaked Eva out a bit when she saw Patrick – my most beloved and trust-worthy hair dresser – start hacking away at my long locks. She’s never seen me with hair this short, though it’s my normal cut, since she’s only known me for a year, and last time I went in, I tried a slightly longer style than I normally get. But it looks awesome, and I can’t tell you how great it feels to be able to feel the breeze on the back of my neck again.

I also went shopping for a necklace to go with my bridesmaid dress this afternoon, and I ended up with two beautiful ones. Now I just have to decide which goes better with the dress (a beautiful two-piece strapless dress in a deep, rich red). I’m sure there’ll be plenty of pictures to post after this weekend that will nicely show off both hair and gown.

After shopping, we met up with our friend Michelle and rented Stranger Than Fiction, which I have been wanting to see since long before it was even released in theaters. Unlike many films that I desperately want to see, this one lived up to all of my expectations. It was fabulous. Great acting (which is saying a lot, since it’s Will Ferrell, who I was not entirely convinced, until this movie, could be a serious actor, though he’s superbly backed up by greats like Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, and Emma Thompson), a plot that keeps you guessing, and really just a great story. It falls into that wonderful genre of "surreal realism," which is one of my absolute favorites in literature and film (other examples include many of the written works by Haruki Murakami and movies like Eternal Sunshine and Adaptation). I can say without hesitation that the minute I have disposable income again, this movie will be added to my DVD collection!

So, on that note, I suppose it’s time for bed. I am, after all, getting up early tomorrow to clean. (Ugh.)
