weekend review
I’ve been trying to post this entry since Sunday morning, but either WordPress or our server had other ideas.
The Big Bash
Friday was BJ Bass’ 60th birthday, and we had a party, which is a rarity for us. I don’t think we’ve had a birthday party here since CJ was little. I made two cakes, ostensibly because one wouldn’t have been enough for the crowd we had (though my estimates were wrong and we have plenty of leftovers), but really because Bass wanted a spice cake and I wanted a chocolate cake. It was an all day endeavor, but if I do say so myself, it was well worth the effort. I took pictures, but they’re lousy, so I won’t subject you to them. Except for this one.
I Miss My Babies
CJ came home for the weekend, and I snapped this picture as he sat in the sunroom talking to me. I hadn’t seen him since Christmas, so it was a real treat to have him here all weekend.
As much as I enjoy the quiet of our empty nest, I miss our children. We’re in constant contact with both of them, but e-mail and telephone are poor substitutes for dinner together and hugs and kisses.
The rest of the weekend was given over to relaxing. Bass had a gig Saturday night, so CJ and I hung out, watched a Back to the Future marathon, and I finished Celtic Braid Sock #1 and cast on for sock #2.
Serial Monogamy in Knitting
For most of my knitting life I was a one-project-at-a-time knitter. I’m of German and Dutch heritage, which makes me single-minded and stubborn. For years, no matter how bored I was with a project I just sucked it up and finished it, so I could get on to something new.
Then I opened Yarn Expressions and met a whole new crop of knitters, some of whom have dozens of projects going at once. I also got older and decided that life was too short to be a bored knitter so much of the time, so I allowed myself to start anything I liked, whenever I liked. You know what? It didn’t open the floodgates. Just the opposite. Because I had so many choices to make, I couldn’t choose. For the past few years I’ve had a horrible time picking out a project to start. So I’m going back to serial monogamy in knitting; for me it’s the best way.
Bridge to Terabithia
One last image. As I walked down the driveway yesterday afternoon, I was struck by the resemblance this tree had to an image from the trailer for Bridge to Terabithia. The one where the tree becomes animated and starts to walk? Can you see it too?

I’m sorry I had to miss the party. My Friday night was pretty boring - I watched TV and knit. I would *much* rather have eaten cake and partied hard with you guys. :)
But we’ll party hard when you come to visit for Hans & Laura’s wedding.
Sorry about the erdufylla.net being down this weekend, too - DreamHost was down for an obnoxiously long time on Sunday (something like 20 hours).
