Ba-da-bum, ba-da-bum (OR: Songs stuck in my head)
It’s been a sort of crappy day, with a little bit of amusement tacked on at the end. I went to the LYS down the street from here to see if they had any part-time job openings, since that’d be an ideal way to tide me over until I can find a real job. Sadly, they not only have no openings, but they’ve also got a list of people waiting for when they do. So, no job at the yarn store for Liz.
I spent some down time after that knitting at the coffee shop down the road from me, which is always nice - good music and interesting people-watching. What’d I work on? A sock, of course. I can’t stop! I’m on a sock-knitting roll. I know I’ve got other projects on the needles, begging for attention, but I just keep casting on new socks. I’m addicted.
I started this sock last night in some Claudia Hand Painted Yarn (colorway "Oops") that I got for Christmas. I actually had started it a few nights ago and got a good ways into it before I realized it was going to be just a skosh too small, so I frogged it all last night and started over (seems to be a trend with me lately). This time it’s perfect, though. Just a simple 6-stitch left cable and rib pattern, knit with my new Lantern Moon size 1 ebony Sox Stix. Unlike the 0s, which were rather flimsy and felt like they were going to snap at any minute, the 1s are quite sturdy and a pleasure to work with. I love them! The Claudia is knitting up into a very thick, squishy fabric, and I’m sure the socks will be quite warm. Too bad spring’s just around the corner. Maybe I’ll get some use out of them before it gets too warm, though.
Anyway, on my way home, my car started overheating ever-so-slightly again. This pisses me off to no end, because I just got it back from the shop for this exact problem. My car guy assured me it wouldn’t happen again, that he’d fixed the problem. He seems to think it was a busted hose connection that was leaking coolant. That may very well have been true, but it’s still overheating. Last time this happened, it was a crack in the engine block. I don’t want to think about that being the case again - one does not need to have car repair bills added to the ever-growing list when there’s no income to speak of. Grrr.
So this evening, I let myself stop thinking (i.e. worrying) about everything and just escape into the world of television while I knit away on my sock. That’s when two amusing, musical things happened in the span of five minutes. The first was while I was watching How I Met Your Mother. One of the minor focuses of the plot in tonight’s episode was one of the character’s broken car stereo that wouldn’t eject the tape that was put in years and years ago, and thus would only play the tape that was in it - a single of "I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by the Proclaimers. What’s amusing about this is that for some unknown reason, I woke up with this song in my head this morning, and it’s been running through my head all day. I haven’t actually heard this song in years. So I was highly amused when I heard it over and over again tonight on TV. The second musical amusement happened during the first commerical break of this show - a JCPenny ad featuring the song "South American Getaway" by Burt Bacharach (from the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid soundtrack). This is amusing to me because it was technically the first song I woke up to. You see, I love how goofy this song is, and quite a while ago, I set it as my alarm clock ringtone on my cellphone. So I wake up to this song every morning. I actually picked up my phone off the table when the ad started because I thought the alarm was going off for some reason.
Of course, the evening of amusement was ruined by the killer headache I’ve currently got. So, I guess I’ll knit some more on my sock while I wait for the Aleve to kick in, and then it’ll be time to hit the sack.
