an unsolicited review

fair isle scarf

Yesterday was a day of running around. I had a doctor’s appointment at noon (routine, nothing to worry about), and the waiting I knew I’d have to do there allowed me to start this fair isle scarf. It’s the model for a class I’m teaching next month, using a simple checkerboard design based on a chart found in Sally Melville Styles. I’ve actually made the sweater in that book, twice, so you’d think I’d get the chart right, wouldn’t you? But I didn’t. Oh well, I like the way this is turning out, so I won’t rip it out. The yarn is Rowan’s Felted Tweed, another long time favorite of mine. Too bad the flash washed out the tweedy goodness of this pretty little thing.

By the time I got out of the doctor’s office it was after 1:00 and I was starved. I knew I had to go to the grocery store, but I wanted lunch first. I ended up stopping at this new little sushi joint in the neighborhood — I Love Sushi. It’s tucked away in a strip mall, next to Bruegger’s, which is where I was really headed. The front windows are covered with blinds, so you can’t see in. I gambled and went in anyway. What looks like a small, four table restaurant turns out to be a larger place, divided by booths for privacy. It’s quiet and well appointed. I chose a few sushi rolls that I particularly like, and an order of gyoza, those nifty little dumplings I can’t ever get enough of.

The service was speedy but not too speedy, and the waitress was courteous. The food was very good. I tried a new combination — ahi tuna and mango, and may have found my new favorite roll.

My criticisms are minor. The shrimp tempura roll I ordered was almost impossible to eat it was so large. Not thickly sliced, but wide around, more than a mouthful. And I have a large mouth. It was quite tasty, but would have been more enjoyable if it had been made smaller.

Music is piped in via satellite radio, or Muzak, or something. It was not objectionable. What was hard on my ears was the car chase on the tv at the sushi bar. Not the air of serenity I think they were going for when they designed this place. Nor was the shout from the front of the restaurant to the back “Hey, Brian, you have a table!

These are minor objections, really they are. I’ll go back, maybe even with BJ Bass in tow. With time they’ll work out the glitches.
