flavors from childhood
Hey Liz — Deb got me to thinking about the flavors of my childhood the other day, with her recipe for Weisskohl Eintopf, a German cabbage soup similar to one my grandmother used to make. Since it’s 27 degrees out at the moment and The Weather Channel is predicting frz rn/slt, I had the urge to venture out to the grocery store, just like any good Southern woman. ‘Cept I wasn’t goin’ for milk and bread. I didn’t think I was very hungry while I was there, but you’d be surprised at what jumped into my cart besides cabbage.
Remember that little sandwich place on A2-Saline Road that we used to go to — Y&S? They had the best wraps I’ve ever eaten, and that was long before they were popular. My favorite was hummus and spinach/artichoke spread on whole wheat lavash. Publix now has good whole wheat flat bread, and it knew I was lusting after a wrap from days gone by, so a package, along with a container of spinach/artichoke dip sauntered over to my buggy cart.
Going back to my childhood, I ended up with some ring bologna and chipped beef in the cart. Since I was powerless to remove them, I loaded up on veggies to roast, so we’ll be having odd combos like SOS with a side of roasted broccoli; ring bologna au jus accompanied by cauliflower a la putanesca. But only after we’ve had cabbage soup a la Grandma Weix.
By the way, the frz rn/slt halted when it learned I was on the road. All hail the power of a strong minded woman!
PS — I’m wearing the beyooootiful socks you made me, and they’re keeping my feet nice and warm. Thank you!
